## What you end up with

In a few minutes you can see whether your agent's morning brief can be checked or has to be taken on trust.

## What you get

- Five brief rules
- brief_mini.py: five read-only checks on one brief-lite.json
- One prompt for all four harnesses
- Worked example: 5 findings, then 0

## Who it is for

Anyone who wants a quick check of an agent's morning brief before trusting it with more.

## Tools needed

- Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex or Hermes: the agent that builds the brief; it reads the skill file, AGENTS.md snippet or rules block, pulls records from read-only sources, writes the brief lines and drafts, and asks brief.py gate before any action
- Python 3: runs brief.py (init, hash, gate, render, owner approval, verify, done) and the fifteen-check checker; standard library only, no network
- You need: Python 3.9 or newer
- You need: Any of Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex or Hermes

Cost to run: Free.

## Sample prompt: Write a brief you can check (Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex, Hermes)

```
Write this morning's brief as brief-lite.json. For every line give the source id I can open and a short quote from it, and copy figures exactly. List every source you tried and whether it loaded. Put replies under drafts with status waiting for owner. Do not send anything.
Run brief_mini.py brief-lite.json and show me the findings.
```

The rules and the script are in the file.

# Executive Morning Brief: five rules and a five-check script (free sample)

Version 1.0, 2026-10-29. By PaperChaseWebb. For owners who ask an agent for a morning brief, in Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex, Hermes or a mix, and want to be able to check it. One Markdown file and one Python 3 script, standard library only. The script was tested on its worked example (5 findings, then 0) and on a missing file (exit 2). It was not run inside any agent harness or against a real inbox or calendar.

The usual morning brief reads well and cannot be checked. A meeting appears that was never booked. A figure is close to the real one. The inbox failed to load and the brief looks calm because of it. Then one day the prompt says "reply to anything simple" and a reply goes out that nobody read. These five rules cover the gaps that cost the most, and the script checks them in one small file.

## Install in one line

Save this page as FREE-SAMPLE.md, then:

```
python3 -c "import re;t=open('FREE-SAMPLE.md').read();open('brief_mini.py','w').write(re.search(r'~~~python\n(.*?)~~~',t,re.S).group(1))"
python3 brief_mini.py brief-lite.json
```

## Five rules

1. **The brief has a human owner.** A person reads it and decides. Not "TBD", and not the agent writing it.
2. **Every line has a source you can open, and a quote from it.** If you cannot click through to the event or the message, the line is a guess.
3. **Figures are copied, not retold.** Every money figure, percentage and large number in a line

## Test record

- Date: Oct 29, 2026
- What was run: brief_mini.py on the worked example, a fixed file and a missing file.
- Result: 5 findings, then 0; exit 2 on a missing file.
- Not run: The prompt inside a harness or on a real inbox.

Copied from this item's dated test notes. What was not run stays in.

## Worth knowing

- The sample checks one file against five rules. The brief folder, read-only sources, gates, render, owner approvals by hash and the fifteen checks are in the full pack.
- On 2026-10-29 brief_mini.py gave 5 findings on the worked example, then 0 on the fixed file, and exited 2 on a missing file. The prompt was not run inside a harness or on a real inbox.

## Questions

**Does it send anything anywhere?** No. It reads one file and opens no network connection.

**What is in the full pack?** The brief folder with templates, brief.py that gates actions and records the owner's yes tied to a hash with one use and expiry, fifteen read-only checks with a seeded test brief, a skill file, AGENTS.md snippet and Grok Bot rules block, ten prompts and a failure table. $24.
