# Pixel sprites and sound effects from one spec file, with a five-check quick check (free sample)

> From Game Assets as Code: a small spec format for pixel sprites drawn as letter grids and seeded retro sound effects, a script that builds them with a hash manifest, five rules to paste into your agent, and a read-only quick check with a worked example.

## What you end up with

Your agent writes sprites and sounds as a spec you can read and edit, every build gives the same files, and a one-second check catches off-palette letters, missing seeds, stale files and clipping sounds.

## What you get

- The mini spec format
- gac_mini.py: build, check and a worked example
- Five rules for AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, Grok Bot or Hermes
- A one-line install
- Worked example: 5 findings, then 0

## Who it is for

Anyone who wants an agent making small pixel sprites and sound effects that stay on palette and rebuild the same way every time.

## Tools needed

- Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex or Hermes: writes and edits the spec file, builds one lane at a time, reads the review page and the checker, and never writes approvals
- Python 3: runs the generators, the review page, promote and the read-only checker; standard library only
- You need: Python 3.8 or newer

Cost to run: Free.

## Sample prompt: Build and check (Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex, Hermes)

```
Save the python block in this file as gac_mini.py. Add a spr_key sprite and an sfx_door sound to mini.spec.json using the palette letters only.
Run gac_mini.py build and then check, and paste the findings. Do not copy anything into the game folder.
```

The rules and the spec format are in the file.

# Pixel sprites and sound effects from one spec file, with a five-check quick check (free sample of Game Assets as Code)

Version 1.0, 2026-10-28. By PaperChaseWebb. For any coding agent that can run Python: Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex or Hermes. One Markdown file and one Python 3 script, standard library only. The script was tested on its worked example (5 findings, then 0), and two builds of the same spec gave identical files. The worked example's PNG and WAV files were loaded in Godot 4.7.2 headless.

Ask an image model for a 16 by 16 coin and you get something that looks like pixel art but is not on a grid, uses forty shades of yellow and comes out different the next time. Ask a coding agent to write the coin as a grid of letters and a palette, and you get exactly 16 by 16, exactly your colors, and the same file every time you build it. This sample is the smallest useful version of that: pixel sprites and short sound effects from one spec file, a manifest with the hash of every file, and a quick check.

## Install in one line

Save this page as FREE-SAMPLE.md, then:

```
python3 -c "import re;t=open('FREE-SAMPLE.md').read();open('gac_mini.py','w').write(re.search(r'~~~python\n(.*?)~~~',t,re.S).group(1))"
```

## The spec

Put mini.spec.json in a folder. A palette maps letters to colors, "." is transparent, and every sprite is a list of rows. Every sound has a seed, a wave, a start and end pitch, a duration and a gain.

```json
{"palette": {"k": "#1a1c2c", "g": "#e8a23c",
````

## Worth knowing

- The sample has no tiles, icons, variants, props, approvals, promote step or full checker; the full pack adds them, tested on a seeded fixture, on Blender 5.2.3 and on Godot 4.7.2 headless.
- On 2026-10-28 the quick check gave 5 findings on the worked example, then 0, and the example's PNG and WAV files loaded in Godot 4.7.2 headless.

## Questions

**Do I need an engine to try it?** No. The script and its worked example run with Python alone, and the PNG and WAV files open anywhere.

**What is in the full pack?** Six seeded lanes including seamless tiles, SVG icons and Blender props, a review page, approvals tied to file hashes, a promote step and release plan, a Godot load test, a skill file for four harnesses, fifteen read-only checks with a fixture, ten prompts and a failure table. $29.
