Turn a spreadsheet into a web app: Sheet Readiness Check (free sample)
by PaperChaseWebb
From the spreadsheet to web app playbook: find what in your sheet will break an app before anyone builds one. A key column with a blank or a repeat, dates that read two ways, one status spelled three ways, words in a money column, two things in one cell and formula errors, each with its row number. Then check the columns-to-fields worksheet; your yes is recorded at your own terminal and the gate stops any worksheet changed after it.

What you end up with
A clean sheet and an approved plan for the app, so the first import works instead of failing on row 9.
What you get
- A sheet scan with row numbers: broken key, mixed date orders, one choice spelled more than one way, words in money, two things in one cell, formula errors
- The eight questions that say build it, no-code first, or talk it through
- A starter worksheet (columns to fields, key, date order, fill-down, people to roles) with [CHECK] where only you know
- A worksheet check: every column mapped once, key filled and unique, dates valid, choices cover the data, nobody can delete rows
- Your yes at your own terminal, refused in agent sessions, and a gate that says NO-GO if the worksheet changed
- AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, a Grok Bot standing order, a Hermes skill and 26 tests
Who it is for
Owners and ops leads whose team runs jobs, orders or clients from a shared sheet and wants a real app, and anyone about to ask an agent to build one.
Works with
Solid chips: the agent is named in this listing's own tools list. Dashed chip: One Python script, templates, a made-up window cleaning company's job sheet and agent rules for each harness. Tested on Linux.
Tools needed
Cost to run: Free. Python is free.
Time to result: About five minutes
How it works
Run the example
Unpack the file and, inside example/, run python3 ../sheet_check.py scan sheet.csv.
Expected: Six findings, including job J-0007 on rows 8 and 9 and a day-first date in a month-first column.
Scan your sheet
Export your sheet to sheet.csv, copy templates/ next to it and put your name in settings.json. Run the scan and fix the sheet.
Expected: SHEET PASS.
Let the agent draft the worksheet
Give it AGENTS.md. It runs draft, fills in what the sheet shows and checks the worksheet.
Expected: Only your [CHECK] markers left, nothing built.
Approve the plan yourself
Answer the markers, then run python3 sheet_check.py approve settings.json drafts/worksheet.md sheet.csv and type approve.
Expected: gate says GO until the worksheet changes.
Sample prompt from the pack
Follow AGENTS.md. Run sheet_check.py scan on sheet.csv and list what I need to fix in the sheet, with row numbers. Then run draft to drafts/worksheet.md, fill in what the sheet shows, leave [CHECK: ...] for anything only I know, and run the worksheet check. Show me the fixes and the worksheet, then stop. Never approve, edit the sheet or start building.
The script and the agent files are in the file.

# Sheet Readiness Check **Most spreadsheet-to-app builds break on the sheet, not the code: a key column with a blank, dates that read two ways, one status spelled three ways. This free sample finds those with row numbers, then checks the plan for the app before anyone writes a line of it. Your agent drafts the plan; you approve it.** Version 1.0, 2026-11-04. By PaperChaseWebb Inc. Free sample of Turn a spreadsheet you run by hand into a small web app ($19). Works with Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex and Hermes, or by hand. Python 3.8 or newer, no installs. Reads any CSV export from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. ## What you get out of it - A sheet scan with row numbers: a key column that is blank or repeats, dates that mix month first and day first, one choice spelled more than one way, words in a money column, two things in one cell, and formula errors like #REF!. - The eight questions that say build it, use a no-code tool first, or talk it through. - A starter worksheet (columns to fields, the key, date order, fill-down columns, people to roles) with [CHECK: ...] wherever only you know the answer. - A worksheet check: every column mapped once, a key that is filled and unique, dates valid in the order you chose, choices that cover the data, money that is money, and nobody allowed to delete a row. - An owner yes, recorded at your own terminal, tied to the worksheet as it reads. Change one word and the gate says NO-GO. ## Who it is for Owners and ops leads whose team runs
Test record
- Date
- Nov 4, 2026
- What was run
- tests/test_sheet_check.py (26 tests) unpacked from the sample file and run fresh on Linux, Python 3.8, 3.9, 3.11, 3.12 and 3.13; scan, fit, draft, worksheet, approve and gate on the made-up example.
- Result
- 26 passed, 0 failed on all five versions; the raw example sheet fails six ways with row numbers and the fixed sheet passes; the good worksheet passes and the bad one fails eight ways, including a delete permission; the yes is refused in agent sessions, without a terminal, for the wrong name, without the typed word and for a worksheet with findings; an edit after the yes makes the gate say NO-GO.
- Not run
- macOS or Windows. A real business spreadsheet. A live Grok Bot, Claude Code, Codex or Hermes session.
Copied from this item's dated test notes. What was not run stays in.
Worth knowing
- The sample scans the sheet and checks the plan. The six stage prompts, the dry-run import, the schemas that keep every change, the role test and the database check are in the full playbook.
- On 2026-11-04: 26 tests passed on Python 3.8, 3.9, 3.11, 3.12 and 3.13 on Linux, run from the files unpacked out of the sample. Agent rules guide; they were not loaded inside each harness for this release.
Questions
Does it change my spreadsheet?
No. It reads a CSV export and writes one worksheet file. It never edits the sheet, creates a database or deploys anything.
Can my agent approve the worksheet?
No. The yes is refused inside an agent session, without a terminal, for a worksheet with findings and for anyone but the owner in settings.json.
What is in the full playbook?
Six stage prompts that each end with a check and a stop, a dry-run import that loads all or nothing, SQLite and Supabase schemas that keep every change and refuse deletes, a role test, a read-only database check and 40 offline tests. $19.

Weekly metrics report agent: Weekly Report Number Check (free sample)
From the weekly metrics report agent: do this week, last week, change and the 4-week average in code from the sheet you already keep, name every blank or unreadable cell, then hold any report that quotes a number the table doesn't have, says up when it went down, states a guess as the reason or skips a gap. Your agent writes; your yes is recorded at your own terminal and the gate stops any report changed after it.
